about

Yellowtail brings the typical cello-laden harmonious indie sound of EMÆL and slams it into a peg-legged neo-soul groove creating a fresh eclectic sound unlike anything you’ve ever heard. With lyrics inspired by 13th Century poet Rumi’s “Chickpea to Cook”, the band explores the struggles of staying grounded in ones true self when constantly inundated with the obstacles or mundaneness of daily life. While traveling in Mexico, frontman Emmanuel Ventura-Cruess heard a little girl singing melodies on the street; accompanying her on guitar, he recorded her singing and it inspired some of the melodies in the song. Yellowtail was birthed from an asymmetrical 15/4 groove idea that came from drummer Joris Hoogsteder; inspired by Chris Dave and Hiatus Kaiyote. The neo-soul style is a new frontier for EMÆL contrasted yet complimented by their wispy dorian vocal lines. The two voices each act as their own melodies weaving and dancing together simultaneously creating beautifully jagged harmony. The song closes with a hopeful plea urging the listener to engage their creative energies. "Don't fold your kite!"

lyrics

I fold my kite
Yellowtail
I close my eyes
Yellowtail

Ignite my fire, marinate divine minds
Watch the chickpea fry to become nutritious
Try and try to nurture the fishes, but
Time and time again downsides up and
Up I fly like a kite, wide-eyed in the sky
So high where I cannot hide my
Yellowtail

I fold my kite
Yellowtail
I close my eyes
Yellowtail
Look at them
Ha! I can do that better so,
Imitate
I close my eyes
Yellowtail

Up I fly like a kite, wide-eyed in the sky
So high where I cannot hide

I’ve never been one to dream a dream
that wasn’t mine
I’ve never been one to reel a fish
that wasn’t right
I’ve never been one to fear the things
inside my mind
I’ve never been one to dream a dream
that wasn’t mine
